Programme 6 - Motivation
John Powell is an athletics coach based at Crystal Palace. He has a day job as Superintendent Deputy Borough Commissioner for the Metropolitan Police in Bexleyheath.
Although John has been a coach for 27 years he finds he lacks confidence. As a police officer John is very confident but stripped of the uniform and the hierarchy, he feels a real difficulty, particularly in giving feedback about negative performance with his athletes; he doesn't feel confident enough to say no I'm right.
John trains Harvard a 22 year old graduate who is one of the fastest 200m runners in the country and John admits to being intimidated by this guy's intelligence and prowess. He wants to keep his good runners but feels if they get a whiff of a lack of confidence then his rising stars will leave for other coaches.
Before
We'll see John at an end of season training session. He will have to motivate his athletes to get ready for the next season but also give them some tough feedback.
We'll also see John in his other role as Police Officer and see how he deals with negative feedback in this situation.
Make Over
· IMPACT
Ros will review John's video. How motivational is he?
Ros will ask him to motivate her to....e.g. take more exercise. She will review what skills he uses. Does he get to know her and use her motivators. She will train him in the 9 motivators.
· THINKING
Ros will train him in thinking in slogans for his own thinking and his athletes. Must come up with a slogan tailored for each ....and one for Ros.
· FEELING
How will he feel like a hero. Who is his hero and if he were that person how would he walk, communicate and coach. Film the difference.
· ACTION
Ros will ask him to coach her to run better, faster. What techniques does he use. Does he coach or tell? Does he reward or undermine? Ross will give him a number of coaching exercises.
After
We will see John be back coaching. He has two difficult tasks. He has to ask one of his athletes to leave and has to give tough feedback to a second. We will see how Ros's coaching has helped him.
