Starting with PROMPT.
The arrival of PRINCE2 was an evolutionary process, starting with PROMPT. This was
developed in 1975 by Simpact Systems Ltd as a project management methodology which divided a
project into logical stages. PROMPT stood for
Project,
Resource,
Organisation,
Management &
Planning
Technique.
The PROMPT methodology was adopted by the CCTA (Central Computer & Telecommunications
Agency) in 1979 as the methodology to be used when implementing government IT projects
Moving to PRINCE.
Continued management failures on government IT projects led to PROMPT being
superseded by
PRINCE in 1989. Its aim was to make civil servants with no project management experience
into reasonably competent ones by offering guidance on how to organise themselves in order
to establish their business needs, initiate projects and monitor progress. PRINCE stands for
PRojects
IN
Controlled
Environments.
PRINCE became one of the best-documented project management methodologies in the world,
mostly because it addressed issues beyond the purely technical enactment of a project. The
