Maximising the chances of project success.
Projects are successful if they deliver the required result within schedule and within budget.
It is possible to reduce the possibility for project failure by considering the following recommendations:
Make sure to plan before starting the development or implementation.
Pay special attention to tasks in the critical path.
Set up the necessary processes to identify, evaluate and inform people of
risks.
Ensure that the project has clear objectives.
Ensure that all changes to
the project are evaluated from a business perspective.
Use the duration instead of the time on task to estimate schedule.
Avoid using linear approximation when estimating time or resources.
Obtain the support from the executive management and
establish if they have any
reservations about the project.
Regularly communicate progress, even if
there has been little of it.
Require that stakeholders participate in design and implementation of your project.
Projects that "succeed" often do so due to the following reasons:
The end users were involved right through the development of the project. |
The project manager had full backing of the executive management. Whatever hurdles came up
during the project were promptly looked into by the latter.
Specifications were clear-cut. This was made possible due to close level of interaction between the end-users and the project team.
Expectations from the project were realistic. There was nothing overly optimistic about what could be achieved within the project's constraints.
