Quality Management.
Time,
Budget and Quality
Your project's success depends on more than just finishing on time and on budget. The quality of the output is also a vital consideration.
Unfortunately, quality is often the first thing to be lost when the budget is cut. However, quality should never be sacrificed, as this can lead to project
failure.
The Three Strands of Quality Management
Quality management considers not only product quality but also the means of consistently achieving the required level of quality. It has three main components:
Quality Control |
Quality Assurance |
Quality Improvement |
Quality
Control
Quality control is the process leading to the maintenance of manufacturing standards.
Quality Assurance
Quality assurance regulates raw materials, assemblies, products and services. Relevant concepts include items being "fit for purpose" and "right first time".
Quality Improvement
There are a number of methodologies covering quality improvement including:
BPR - Business Process Re-Engineering is a management approach which aims to make improvements irrespective of existing practices. |
Continuous Improvement - in Japanese this is kaizen
("kai" = change, "zen" = good). |
DMAIC - Design, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) (part of Six Sigma).
Kansei Engineering - concentrates on customer feedback about products to drive improvements.
Lean Manufacturing - a western version of the Toyota Production System.
PDCA - Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle for quality control purposes.
Six Sigma. (more) |
Taguchi - statistical methods for Quality robustness, Quality loss function and Target specifications. |
TQM - Total Quality Management. First promoted in Japan through the Deming prize, and in Europe by the European Foundation for Quality Management Award.
