Accident investigation is a painstaking process that can be made virtually impossible when obstructed by politicians and diplomats. When a JAL Boeing 747 crashed into the Japanese Alps on 12th August, 1985, American investigators were initially refused access to the site. However, as this programme reveals, the cause was quickly identified as a failure in the bulkhead.
