At 16:53 on Saturday 1st June 1974, a temporary bypass pipe containing cyclohexane under pressure at 150°C ruptured. Within a minute the cloud of vapour exploded, completely destroying the Nypro chemical plant at Flixborough.
The fuel-air explosion was estimated to be equivalent to 15 tonnes of TNT and it killed 27 employees plus a delivery driver who died of a heart attack. Around 1,800 buildings within a mile radius of the site were damaged in this, Britain's biggest ever peacetime explosion until the Buncefield Depot explosion in 2005.
This classic BBC documentary programme investigates the chemical plant explosion and asks what lessons can be learned for the future.
