As eBay continues to go from strength to strength, its own success could be its worst enemy?
eBay, the original star of Silicon Valley's dotcom boom, it is still going strong, growing at a rate most national governments would be proud of. Earning over £500 million a year, the 'person-to-person' trading website has over 100 million registered users, and has a significant presence in more than 30 countries. It's estimated that in the UK today, 10,000 people earn all or some of their income trading on the online auction site. But eBay's very success makes it vulnerable.
This programme investigates how eBay faces future problems likely to stem from factors outside of its control, not its economic performance. As part of the unregulated 'black economy', it is government intervention, rather than the market, that could clip eBay's wings.
If eBay continues to grow at current rates, it is certain to impinge on the consciousness of tax collectors and excise agents around the world. Governments are now taking an interest in the massive growth in 'person-to-person' trading which, until now, they have found hard to regulate. With the total value of trades on eBay now worth $34 billion a year, it's an area that the authorities can no longer ignore, and are increasingly keen to regulate.
Yet, there is still a grey area between private and professional buying and selling. Until this is made clear and tax plans become concrete, it'll be business as usual at eBay.
