As a downturn in consumer spending suddenly threatens retailers' balance sheets, the Money Programme examines new - and some would say desperate - attempts by high street chains to woo shoppers and win their loyalty. They are now sending teams of anthropologists to stay in people's homes for weeks on end, to examine every tiny detail of their lifestyles in order to find out consumer needs.
The Money Programme follows one such study and asks if this is an unacceptable intrusion into our personal lives.
